Personally I was on such a high all weekend after Friday being the success it was.” There were 230 entries and 70 performers taking part in the auditions Saturday and Sunday who provided the judges with the tough decision of who to award the section winners. The overall winners for the 2016 Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards were (Junior Overall) Zac Griffith, (Intermediate Overall) Jaydin Shingleton and (Senior Overall) Toni Biddle. The finals show was closed with the whole awards cast singing together ‘Now is the Hour’, as their farewell to the theatre. “It was an incredible sight as the audience even got to their feet to wave and sway to the music. What a great way to end the awards and say goodbye to the theatre,” Carolyn says. Rain a welcome relief for region By Jacob Page Rain over the last two days in Marlborough has eased fears over water restrictions for now and given Renwick some much needed respite. This week has started on a positive note, with 30-40 mm of rainfall being received across most of the district, and falls of up to 80mm on the ranges. The water level at the Renwick bores continues to rise as a result of higher flows in the Wairau River.

This is expected to continue after the overnight rain on Tuesday and another fresh lot in the river. During the last week the water level increased by a further 360mm. There is now 1790mm of water above the pumps when they are operating. However the pump output is still limited to 44 litres per second. The Marlborough District Council are not in a position to restore the output to full flow, as this will reduce the water level above the

bore pumps. An increase in flow back to normal will reduce the water level at the bores to approx. 900mm; 1000mm is required for effective operation at full flow. After last night’s rain this might be possible early next week. The water level is expected to continue rising especially as the forecast is for further rain over the next few days. Residents can pat themselves on the back for their efforts to date. The advertising and regular

‘New asset’ arrives at SPCA Story and photo by Celeste Alexander There’s a new set of hands helping out at the SPCA Marlborough centre as former animal control officer Bec Moorhouse joins the team to train as an animal welfare inspector. It has long been a career goal for Bec to study and work in the animal welfare field, so when a vacancy came up at the SPCA she ‘jumped at it’. “I grew up on a farm and was terrible at bringing home strays, I always felt sorry for them. “At one point as a young girl I was bringing home so many wild cats that it must have made mum go crazy,” she laughs. Her experience dealing with a variety of farm animals, coupled with her experience working for Marlborough’s Animal Control service has given her the skills for her new role, says SPCA

Cur rently Kaycee is the only SPCA animal welfare inspector covering a large area from Kaikoura through to the Marlborough Sounds. Once Bec has completed her Certificate in Animal Welfare Investigations through Unitech, a 12 month long programme she will do by distance learning, she will join Kaycee. “It’s going to relieve a lot of pressure that’s on me and our response time to complaints will decrease once both of us are covering the area,” Kaycee says. While she is studying Bec will continue to work at the SPCA centre running the boarding kennels which are now open and taking bookings. Power trust nominations close By Cathie Bell Marlborough people have until noon on Friday to put their names forward to stand for election to the Marlborough Electric Power Trust, the trust that owns lines company Marlborough Lines on behalf of all power users in the district. Four positions are up for grabs on the six-member trust board and it was expected a postal vote election would be held next month. Trust returning officer Brenda Munro said all sitting members on the trust now were intending to stand again, and there had been one new nomination as well. “To date, there hasn’t been a lot of interest… We’d welcome others to show an interest.”

Marlborough Lines is one of the few community-owned lines companies left after electricity industry deregulation in the 1990s. The trust holds 100 per cent of the lines company’s shares on behalf of all power users. It distributes rebates and discounts from the lines company to power users twice a year – once in December and again in March or April. Marlborough Lines estimates electricity consumers in Marlborough have received discounts totalling $102.4 million since 1999. Despite returning money to customers each year, the trust has a low profile. It struggled to get enough people for a quorum at its annual meeting last year. Brenda said Marlborough

people seemed pretty comfortable with the trust. “Things are going really well, the company is going really well, so that’s good.” Trust activities had been quiet for a number of years, she said. “The only times there has been a lot of interest, there was a lot of scrapping going on. I think people were coming along for the show.” The deadline for nominations for trust positions is noon on Friday. Nomination forms are available at Blenheim Accounting in Maxwell Road. Voting papers would go out at the end of February, with the election early March, and elected trustees announced by the end of March.

By Tom Percy For most bike riders, there’s nothing quite like heading off on an extended trip. Whether it’s just throwing a couple of shirts and sammies in the backpack or a well-planned ride with scheduled waypoints, the lure of our beautiful open roads never fails to thrill. Eventually of course we have to head home, but riders beware because that last day on the road is the most dangerous. Too many times we hear of a rider involved in a crash on their way home. How is it that a long trip can go so well only to end badly and sadly not far from home? The number one culprit? Fatigue. But why more so on that last day? Here are two stories. Several years ago, we were on an extended tour and decided to bypass our last destination and head all the way home to Blenheim in one run of 450km. The weather had been good and after several hours of riding all was well until we turned away from the coast just north of Kekerengu and were hit with the infamous Marlborough nor’ westers. With two up on a fully faired bike, the next hour and a half was a tense and exhausting struggle with winds that we found out later approached 100kph. The constantly swirling gusts battered the bike from side to side as we wrestled our way over the hills, and several times we were almost either blown off the road or pushed into oncoming traffic. Our safety margins were wiped out, I was knackered and we were lucky to make it home safely.

Here’s another situation. A tour south finishing with a track day at Ruapuna, and what could be better for a serious sports bike rider than to run wide open laps on a proper race track? Follow that with one of the great rides in the country up that same Kaikoura coast road and it should make for a perfect trip. But it’s been a long day; your system is probably still churning from track-induced adrenalin and testosterone, and you’re tired. You overcook a tight left-hander and you’re going down. Not good you think, but you’re in leathers and not going that fast – should be okay. But there’s no defence against that big SUV in the opposite lane that runs over you. Sound farfetched? Sorry, another true story. The rider escaped with his life, but not two years of pain-filled rehabilitation. Fatigue affects your mind and body in many ways – few good. It clouds your ability to make good decisions, it slows your reaction times when faced with a sudden problem. Bike riders have only a few things between them and danger. You have your riding skills, your good sense and whatever margins of safety you can utilise while on the road. Fatigue erodes those skills and good sense and when they go, your margins are drastically compromised. Take your time; make your last day the shortest day. Be careful out there and get home safe.

Kennard set for Rally of Monte Carlo By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon and Blenheim-based John Kennard launch their 2016 FIA World Rally Championship campaign at the most famous and challenging rally of them all – Rallye Monte-Carlo. Paddon and Kennard are the first New Zealand driver and co-driver pairing to contest the iconic rally, which takes place along the French Riviera in the Principality of Monaco and southeast France from 21 to 24 January. Paddon, originally from Geraldine, and Kennard, from Blenheim, contest all 14 WRC rounds this year, making it their biggest season of international competition yet. This New Zealand motorsport historymaking opportunity stems from their signing of a three-year contract with Hyundai Motorsport – the team for which they have driven since June 2014 – following the successes of their 2015 season. Paddon is under no illusions of the difficulties which lie ahead on the snowy, icy mountainous Monte Carlo rally route. “I would rate this one of the most challenging events on the calendar due to the wintry conditions we expect,” says the Europe-based 28-year-old. “Given we have not competed in this rally

before and have much to learn about the tyre choices, potential stage conditions and narrow, winding roads, our goal is to use this event to learn for the future. “It’s a way to get our new season with Hyundai Motorsport started and the main goal is to finish.” For Kennard, who’s in charge of delivering the detailed pace notes of the rally route so Paddon can visualise the road ahead for maximum speed, the complexity of the conditions and information provided by the gravel-ice crew adds other considerations. “For me the biggest challenge with Monte so far has been preparing the notes we have from recce in 2014 and 2015 with enough space for the ice note crew to add the very large amount of information they sometimes need to,” Kennard says. “This has meant rewriting the notes we’ll re-use with less lines per page, so there’s more room between. So the longest of the stages, at over 55km, has expanded from 25 to 42 pages! “Also, as the time is often quite limited to transfer this info from the ice note copy into my notes, it’s the only event where I’m likely to end up using a copied set of notes on the stages, something I’ve never done before.”

I agree with that. Over in the bay we had to cut the scallop season short. Fishing is fun but it would be good to catch something. Commercial fishing does too much damage.

I don’t know much about it but there’s a lot of controversy among the locals. It’s caused a bit of an upset.

It’s a good idea. We need to think about over fishing and know the consequences. Maybe put a time period on when you are allowed to fish commercially.

Yes, I am all for that.

Growling cars Dear Ed, I suppose most mature people get fed up with the growling, snarling cars young hoons (or is it goons?) speeding around Blenheim streets? Questions arise? Is there some limit on noise a car emits?

Rarangi - the place to be Dear Ed, Well it is for me, and usually for my dog too – however not last week! He loves barking and chasing seagulls so as he headed south along the beach. Monday December 28, the seagulls were all flying south. So as my black and white huntaway disappeared in the distance, he kept going at full voice. I know this because so many people responded to my query “Have you seen a black and white huntaway? After walking from Rarangi to the Diversion and back twice and then back again by car, I was really starting to get worried as there was no sign of him. Finally some positive news as someone said they had seen a dog chasing seagulls on the other side of the Diversion. It was now about four hours after he first went missing Can I get a vehicle over there? I asked. “No way” I was told until one person gave me a little tip about a gate that is closed, but not locked so away I went. It’s pretty barren down there and as

the tide was now coming in, there was no luxury of walking on firm sand. I headed back to my car, back on to the road and headed south looking for beach access. Following the main road out, I hopped out and started heading towards the beach again when I heard a bark that I

knew only too well! I really couldn’t believe that he was still walking and barking as it was a hot afternoon, He had been gone for over 5 hours and he had no fresh water. I saw a group of people with their families there. I yelled out to apologise as he had been barking. Sean (Shaun?) came over and introduced himself. He advised me that Crash had been there for a couple of hours, barking. He was concerned as he had seen the dog drinking sea water so had given him fresh water and sausages off the BBQ. What a legend! He knew the dog belonged to someone as he was friendly enough so had posted him on facebook as well. I headed back to Rarangi and noted an ‘Animal Control’ vehicle parked 2 doors from where I was staying. So from Crash and myself, thank you to Sean for looking after him at the Wairau Bar, and for the Animal Control who responded so quickly to help locate him. Rarangi really is the place to be!

She talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about returning as manager of the St Vincent de Paul charity shop in Blenheim after seven years away, the challenges and joys of her role and how she balances her busy life. “There’s never a dull moment and the people keep it interesting.” Christine O’Neil is just over a week into her new role as manager of the St Vincent de Paul charity shop on High St and she says she hasn’t sat down. Christine was in the role from 2004 to 2009 before stepping away, but now with her children growing up and a renewed enthusiasm for helping those in need, she’s back better than ever. “I filled in as acting manager for five months last year and realised how much I really enjoyed interacting with people,” Christine says. “I went home and spoke to my husband about it and decided I’d take the job at the start of 2016.

“In 2009 I felt after five years of working here it was time for someone new to come in and offer a fresh perspective and way of thinking.” Christine has implemented her own spin on things already. She’s set up a shoe and linen room which has proved very popular. “We could always do with more linen and menswear,” she says. “Often the people who come from overseas to work in the vineyards find our summer cold initially so they need warm clothes.” Christine is someone who will go the extra mile. While the job is only meant to be 15 hours a week, she is often seen there on her weekends and out the back trying to find the right thing

for a customer. The shop is open six days a week and she has 30 dedicated staff who voluntarily give their time when they can. “Having the quality of the staff that we do at the moment was one of the big factors in me accepting the role,” she says. “They are all fantastic.” Christine and her husband have four children and have international students stay with them and have also had foster children at times. “Both me and my husband love helping people and are very giving… It’s very rewarding.” Christine says her shop has never been used as a place to dump unwanted junk but sometimes the

donation bin at the St Mary’s Parish has had food items in it. “Dumping items isn’t a major issue here,” she says. “At the end of the day we want to be known for selling good quality second hand items and doing so with a friendly smile and a welcome when you come in to have a look.” Christine says while a lot of items are sold from the one charity bin, it’s items that come in from people off the street that is a big part of the business. “Often someone has had a wife or husband die and we will go to their house in a team of two and try to sort through with them items they’d like to donate to us. “We always try to show compas-

sion during that time because it’s a very emotional situation and we always try to offer comfort to those who need it.” The shop building has also recently been earthquake strengthened which she says makes her staff feel safe. Christine says the job has many rewards. “The staff are great and often you see the same customers every week so it’s nice to build a relationship with them and you begin to work out things they like.” Christine says she is always appreciative of how giving the Marlborough community is and believes she sees generosity every day in her job.

‘Preparing a Will’ is something that is promoted to people in their younger years, encouraging people with assets and children to be prepared in the event of their death. The importance of having a Will is to determine what will happen to an individual’s possessions, assets and finances should they pass away. As many of people approaching their senior years have already noticed, muscle mass decreases as you age. Beginning in the fourth decade of life, adults begin to lose a percentage of muscle mass per decade, and the decline increases per year after age 50. Muscle keeps us strong, it burns calories and helps us maintain our weight, and it is also an essential contributor to our balance and bone strength. Without it, we can lose our independence and our mobility. Have you ever asked yourself; “Is it ever too late to build muscle?” The good news is that muscle mass can increase at any age in response to exercise. Exercise can be invigorating and help build muscle mass at any age, so speak to your local GP for advice on where to start. There are a number of local groups that meet at the swimming pool for aqua aerobics, social walks and even for group yoga sessions. One exercise that is easy yet great for muscle strengthening is knee extensions. These will improve your balance and reduce your risk of falling. They also allow you to walk and climb stairs with greater ease and comfort. • Sit on a chair with your back straight and knees bent • Slowly extend your right leg out in front of you and

hold for a few seconds before lowering it back to starting position • Repeat with your left leg • Do 10 repetitions on each leg For a more advanced version, strap an ankle weight around each ankle. Aim for a weight that is heavy enough to where you cannot do more than 15 repetitions per leg. As you get stronger, you can add more weight to keep it challenging.

Free time in retirement You’ve done the hard part: spent a lifetime getting out of bed and going to work, taken care of your family, and saved up for a nice, long retirement. But what exactly do you do to fill all your hard earned free time? When there is so much time but little to do, fight off restlessness by focusing on recreational activities or volunteer work to keep busy. • Write your memoirs This could be in the form of letters to your living relatives, or journal entries every day.

Recording your past experiences and adventures will allow you to share these moments with loved ones and relay life lessons to others. • Read your way through a book list Maybe you have an ongoing list of books you’ve been keeping all these years for when you have the time to delve into them or head to your local library and work your way through a book list. • Join a club Look for clubs that may appeal to your interests or hobbies.

Friendship takes fun to new level Story and photo by Celeste Alexander No, they are not taggers but instead a group of ladies creating a masterpiece artwork as part of their ‘Friendship Group’ monthly meets. This social group of ladies meets regularly, co-ordinated by Age Concern Marlborough to enjoy friendship, activities and a chat over a cup of tea together. Yesterday was the group’s first meet for the year, and once the cups of tea were put down they put their skills and put spray cans to canvas. The finished product will proudly hang in Age Concern’s newly painted office. Age Concern Marlborough field officer Catherine Donnelly says the idea to paint with spray cans came from Pinterest which she thought would be something “a bit different” for the group to do. “It’s a bit of fun that gets everyone involved, much like all of our meetings,” she says.

The Friendship Group is a popular social group that has been running for a number of years, and meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Community Centre on Alfred Street. Participants are members of Age Concern and are always welcoming of new people to the group. Members Bev Birch and Mary Price say they always look forward to the meets and have made friends from the group. The two joined around nine months ago. “It’s wonderful, we talk over morning tea, get to know each other and get out and about as a group,” Mary says. “Catherine has some marvellous ideas that are so original. New boat, new opportunities Sport By Jacob Page The Simply The Breast dragon boat team have a new boat they are hoping will make them more competitive. The new boat named Kotahitanga, which translates to “Strong Together” was blessed at the Blenheim Rowing Club last night. The new 12 person boat which includes enough room for 10 paddlers, a drummer and a sweep is roughly 10m long. The 25-strong team which includes many breast cancer survivors has fundraised using all sorts of means including auctions, fashion parades, raffles and sausage sizzles. Team member Wendie Partner says it’s humbling that people are so giving. Fellow team member Sue Bason says the team was always “squirrelling money away for new boats.” The team’s first dragon boat which was gifted to them has since been re-gifted to a Greymouth team who

Hipkins Cup set to test swimmers

By Jacob Page This year the Hipkins Cup Sea Swim hosted by the Rarangi Surf Lifesaving Club will be held on Tuesday at 6pm. The swim takes place just north of the Rarangi Fire Station and finishes on the beach at Whites Bay. The course covers a distance of 2.3km but organiser Brendon Ferguson says as any sea swimmers know it’s pretty hard to go in a straight line with the currents, swells, and tide changes that are present. The swim began in 1960 when speedos and grease were the choice of swimming attire, however these days it is highly recommended that competitors wear the wetsuit and a bright coloured swimming cap.

This year sees the 49th race as it has missed a few years in the past, meaning they are hoping for a big event next year to celebrate 50 races. The swim is open to people of all ages with the main group of competitors in the past few years being the masters swimming club. Last year’s race saw a few more younger swimmers and was taken out by Sally McMath who was the first female to win in recent years. Registrations will be taken from 5pm at the car park about 200m north of the Rarangi Fire Station. Registration costs $10 per swimmer and those under 18 will need to be signed by a parent or caregiver.
